Growing flowers is a passion and a calling. Sharing them is the fun.
Our story begins in 2010. Carlos was working at a retail store, and I, a newly single mother of twins, got a part time job at the same retail store. We were both working full time and part time. We new that each of us were strong driven hard workers. All something needed to grow and develop a farm.
We got married in 2014, and our family grew to include our son Jordan and with our twins who lived solely with us. Carlos stepped into the role of Dad very quickly. We worked very hard to pay off all our debt together and bought a house on the west side of Madison.
Talking about our family, our future, and my past out on walks around our neighborhood. I talked about long ago growing up in Indiana, my family spent nights in the barns having fun, events and just being together. I wished Jordan could experience being in the country on a farm. Watching fireflys at night. Bonfires. Running in the corn. Climbing on seed bags.
The twins spent time out there for many years with me so they ran with no shoes on across gravel. Climbed on rock piles. Played in the dirt seed and sand. Collected bugs and so on...
Jordan and Carlos were both from the city of Madison. My family was aging and the farm life was dying off in our family. On our walks, we talked about getting some land. Maybe looking at my dream of the past.
We decided to look at places online to get a feel of something. We saw an open house that just came back on the market outside Deforest. Had about 4 acres of land and a barn. We decide to head out to see it.
Pulling up to the property, I felt this was my place. My home. We got out and I saw everything all at once in my vision.
My family not so much, they wanted to go to another. I had to share my vision with my family and trusting in me. We sold our house and moved out of the city.
We have spent over 3 years, paying as we go for all the work. Carlos and I have worked multiple jobs. Had so many setbacks. Scares and fears. We still push on to create a space for flowers, bees, birds, animals and people. Developing the gardens. Creating a space to grow and learn.
So why flowers and why tulips? We spent years trying to figure out how to share this amazing place and our passion. The flower story begins with my past as well. My family name Vissers. Read on to our Dutch connection.
Flowers came to life also from my past in a few ways. Having this land and space, my mind is forever an artist. I used my creativity to look out and see something as complete.
I, in a past life, photographed families. And remembered a place, a home in Indiana that every spring had tulips. I loved the photos from the garden and always thought just how beautiful.
I looked out into our field and saw the flowers covering it. I knew what I needed to do. We began planting the flowers in 2023 fall. Learning and trying things as we go along. We found easier ways to plant and faster ways.
We began talking again and decided to incorporate some of our Dutch family connections into the farm. And the strongest producers of tulips and our source for the bulbs is our of the Netherlands.
The Vissers connection. My great-grandfather, George Vissers, was born in Schaijk, Noord Brabant, Netherlands. He immigrated to Wisconsin and married Anna Pynenberg. Moving to Freedom Wisconsin to become small farmers. The farming life continued with my Grandfather Peter, who died at a young age. Leaving the farm to my Grandmother and father, Thomas and his siblings.
Looking into our history, and learning of our strong Dutch connection, we want to celebrate our history. My family's challenges moving to a new country. Going from fishing and channels of Netherlands to the Midwest of Wisconsin.
Our farm dream is to celebrate the Dutch heritage every spring. We would love to grow to have dancers, cloggers, foods, clothing and of course history of the tulips and Netherlands. As our farm grows so will this area.
